Let your spirit sour!
Throughout my life I had found it difficult to understand my family. My family, who were born and lived half of their lives in Sri Lanka, left the country due to a civil war and arrived in Australia as victims of circumstance. They instilled in me values of hard work and gratitude. However I also felt controlled and trapped by their beliefs as I grew up to find my place in the world.
Often during my school days I would compare myself with other people and feel lesser in self-worth. There would be a carrot dangling in front of me that read ‘Medicine’ and ‘Doctor’. And so I pursued a career in medicine to become a doctor where my family and community would look upon me with praise. I achieved this feat, yet I still found that I was comparing myself with other people. What this meant was I was seeking validation from a career that I believed would give me self-worth rather than acknowledging the gift that I was born to be as ME.
And so I left my career path to pursue a deeper meaning and truth to my life. The reason why we do anything is because we seek meaning. As I did so, I was confronted with judgement, guilt, and shame from family that had based their self-worth on my own achievements.
Often the greatest strength is evoked in oneself when you are tested to fearlessly back yourself against the odds and against what might seem logical to you but not to others. Your actions in life may also be confronting for those closest to you and their reactions may test your resilience in backing what gives your soul the freedom to fully express itself however it chooses to do so.
If this post reminds you of similar themes playing out in your life, what parts of your life can you step into today that backs yourself and honours the freedom of your soul?
“Seek now the meaning of all things so that your suffering may end. Do not wait, believing that you will find knowledge after you have taken on a new body.”
