What to do when you are overwhelmed by a tsunami of emotion?

From time to time, there will be moments in my life where I am hit with a wave of emotion.

It may be because of a life circumstance that built up over time and had largely been ignored until it bubbled up to the surface. Sometimes it can be through family or old friends where unresolved emotions were placed at bay only to resurface again.

The truth is there will always be a new challenge to overcome as this is the way we expand and grow. But the process of dealing with this can become easier and easier when you learn how.

Our circumstances in life becomes clear when there is resilience to get through the challenging moments with grace, reverence, peace, and love.

The emotions can be so painful because it has been hidden away in the conscious mind for such a long time and so when it does come up through life experience (which inevitably all things do), it can be overwhelming to deal with.

We can react in negative behaviours where we take out our emotions on others, we might make decisions day to day that impacts our work and creativity or important life choices.

So here are 3 steps that will help you to overcome emotional anxiety.

1) Bring awareness to the emotions coming up for you and honour it. This awareness empowers you to realise what you are experiencing and will open insight for you to do something about it.

2) Emotion is a form of energy that is stored in the body. This energy is released when we can shift the emotion through a powerful physical activity. Emotional somatic energy can be transmuted through exercise, dancing, singing, screaming, or laughing. These activities are all modes of physical expression that causes energy release out of the body.

3) Meditate. Still the mind. What transpires as you do this is increased awareness. Your brain accesses a higher range of energy that can efficiently process the emotions you had been experiencing, and this will be made evident to you through the clarity of thought and insight that you will receive to understand the circumstances that the emotions came from.

“Meditate to control the senses. Do what must be done, and suffering ceases.”
Lord Buddha, The Dhammapada
